Sbarbatelle—a new wine movement?

Much more than an event with more than 70 young women winemakers from all over Italy.

As has now become tradition for us at Langhe.TV, the last weekend in June was spent at the estate of the Marchesi Alfieri of Asti for the 2022 edition of SBARBATELLE, the event created by sommelier Paolo Poncino and curated with his team of sommeliers from the AIS Asti delegation. Asti itself is the city in the heart of Piedmont making a place for itself on the world wine stage with the help of talented contributors such as the producers of the Nizza DOCG, the committed makers of Grignolino, an accomplished restaurateur or two, enterprising wine shops and of course, the hardworking AIS sommeliers.

Amid a lot of wine talk, wines from an impressive 17 Italian regions were tasted. We met up with 70 vintners under the age of 35, from almost all of Italy.

As always, the event was expertly organised and a great success with the public, despite searing temperatures hardly conducive to tasting wine.

Beyond the event itself, ‘Sbarbatelle’ has become a real movement.. Here's a quote from journalist Annacarla Tredici of La Reppublica that perhaps describes it best: It is an phenomenon about identity, established to boost awareness of the growing role of women in the world of wine. The new generation of wine entrepreneurs - she writes - are more and more conscious of the "new context” in which wine is being made and marketed”.

All daughters of a generation of audacious, determined women caught between family and work, today’s young women winemakers dash about their daily tasks.

All of them - and they represent nearly 30% of Italian producers - are strengthening their position in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

All are able to roll up their sleeves and take command–both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Digitally-savvy, environmentally-conscious and respectful of tradition they pay particular attention to promoting wine culture. An example of this social and cultural dimension is the “Adopt a Sbarbatella” initiative, proposed by winemaker Beatrice Gaudio, who along with her Piedmontese fellow winemakers hosts participants from other regions at home.

As a symbol of the Italy that would like to rev up and rekindle human relationships, the “Sbarbatelle” are committed to revolutionising the entire industry with their creativity, competence and innovation.

And above all else, each one with her own style.
